Coach Russ Polhemus

Mr. Polhemus is the former director and owner of Sports Medicine & Fitness Institute, the first evaluation and personalized prescription exercise facility in the Southeast. As a coach and athlete, he has won two state championships, nine conference championships (four SEC championships) and assisted in one national championship in track and field. He is a graduate of East Texas State University with a B.S. and M.S. degrees in the field of Health, Physical Education, and Psychology. He has coached and taught at the college level in track and field and strength and conditioning at Georgia Tech, University of Tennessee, and Texas Tech. Coach Todd Polhemus

Todd Polhemus is the President and Owner of Sports Medicine and Director of Sports Training. Coach Todd, as a coach an or athlete, has extensive experience in soccer and track and field. Has earned a number of all-state and conference individual awards, Team accomplishments include winning on state championship, thee conference championships, and was runner-up in the national championships (soccer). He is a graduate of Birmingham Southern College, with an B.S. in Education, and concentration in Psychology. Coach Joseph Alaimo

Joe Alaimo is the Vice President of Sports Medicine and Fitness Institute (SMFI) and has been with SMFI since 2004. Joe's enthusiasm for sports drives him to coach/mentor young athletes and participate competitively as a player. He has experience coaching basketball, volleyball, and baseball for both youth and club teams. Individual and team accomplishments include recognition by Georgia Tech for hitting, serving as a volunteer assistant for his high school's varsity volleyball team helping lead them to the state title, coaching and playing on a traveling baseball team who won the state championship, and working with the local Little League and Big League organization as an umpire. Joe holds a Bachelor of Science from Samford University studying physiology and sports management. His research focused on the use of interval training as well as health issues such as BMI and the effects of obesity. Joe also has a background in special education and volunteers his time to work with children with special needs helping them develop their social, gross motor, and fine motor skills.

Joe is the Director for Beach Volleyball tournaments in the Birmingham area in addition to being a competitive volleyball player winning numerous tournaments thus far. Joe has also coached at Southern Performance Volleyball Club, while now heads private lessons and coaches sand volleyball teams and also coaches indoor teams for Birmingham Volleyball Club. He assists players in the recruiting process for those considering their options to play at the next level. Joe is also on the coaching staff currently for the UAB Beach Volleyball team

Coach David Polhemus

Coach David Polhemus LMT, NMT is Nationally Certified in Clinical Massage Therapy and Neuromuscular Therapy. He practices Orthopedic and Sports Massage Therapy for Performance and Recovery. He is licensed through the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy and is Nationally Certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. He is a Professional Member of the American Massage Therapy Association and adheres to their code of ethics and standards of practice. Click here to read more.
